JAMESTOWN, N.D.-- The sixth-ranked University of Jamestown ACHA Division 1 men's hockey team lost for just the second time on home ice this season, falling 6-2 Wednesday evening to No. 1 UNLV at John L. Wilson Arena.
The visiting Rebels took control in the first period, scoring two goals to take a 2-0 lead. Joseph Carollo opened the scoring at 16:11, assisted by Oliver Band. Just over a minute later, Asher Wites scored an unassisted goal at 17:14.
UNLV extended its lead in the second period with two more goals. Caleb Strong scored the eventual game-winner on a power play at 8:06, with assists from Dillon Kuntz and Charles Masek. Jaxsen Wyatt followed up with an unassisted goal at 8:55 to make it 4-0.
Jamestown got on the board at 10:02 of the second period with a power-play goal from
Carter Johnson, assisted by
Marcus Fritel.
In the third period, the Jimmies cut the deficit to 4-2 when Raymond Warrack scored at 13:38, assisted by
Griffin Bourassa and
Carter Johnson. However, UNLV answered with two more goals. Luke Backel scored at 15:00, assisted by Masek, and Tristan Rand added a power-play goal with assists by Heath Mensch and Kuntz at 17:04 to seal the 6-2 victory.
UJ's
Brandon Weare made 23 saves on 29 shots. UNLV's Douglas Wakelyn stopped 22 of 24 shots.
The two teams meet again at John L. Wilson Arena Thursday at 7 p.m.
